Getting a tattoo is a big commitment – and it’s an even bigger deal when you’re thinking about what you want as your first ever tattoo. Do you go for something spontaneous, or do you have an idea of a design that you’ve always wanted that signifies something memorable? Read on to find out how to prepare and plan.

Planning for your tattoo

  • Choose the design ahead of time – in order to book in for a tattoo, you will need to know what design you want. You can take a look through our portfolio for inspiration, or send us examples of the tattoo designs you like so that we can create something special for you ahead of the appointment.
  • Choose where you want a tattoo – if you’ve never had a tattoo before, we’d recommend choosing an area of the body with fewer nerve endings so that it’s less painful, such as the outer shoulder, outer arm or other fleshy places. By doing this you can gage your pain tolerance for future tattoos.
  • Plan to have the tattoo on clear and healthy skin – tattoos can of course be used to cover thick scars and uneven patches of skin, but it will be clearer if it’s put onto clear skin. With the area you have chosen to get tattooed, make sure to keep the skin smooth and supple by using moisturiser prior to the appointment and avoid getting the area sunburnt or bruised prior to the tattoo session.

For a detailed step by step guide to preparing for your tattoo, check out our guide here. You’ll find everything you’ll need to know to be prepared including getting enough sleep in before the session, what to eat and what snacks to pack to keep your blood sugar levels up.

Nailing the aftercare tips

It’s important to follow a rigorous tattoo aftercare plan to help your tattoo heal and look its best. Read our blog for a step-by-step guide, which includes a recommended day by day and week by week plan to keep it clean and hydrated for the best results. For long-term care, make sure to use protective skin care products, especially if the tattoo is exposed to the sun and UV rays.
